Richard Tice rallies to the defence of Reform’s crypto ‘patriots’ | John Crace

September 15, 2026 2 min read

Richard Tice found himself in the firing line during a particularly bruising media round this week as he attempted to defend Reform UK’s recent influx of cash from cryptocurrency billionaires. Stepping in for Nigel Farage, who appeared keen to avoid the spotlight amidst ongoing police investigations into party funding, Tice faced a grilling from Nick Robinson on the Today programme. The central issue revolves around massive donations from Christopher Harborne and Ben Delo, sparking questions about whether the funds comply with new legislation designed to curb overseas political contributions.

Tice described the donors as patriots driven by a desire to save Britain from both socialists and traditional Tories, though the definition of patriotism seemed flexible under scrutiny. Harborne, for instance, had previously taken Thai citizenship and a Thai name after moving abroad decades ago. When pressed on whether Harborne currently pays UK tax or exactly when he returned to the country, Tice admitted he was clueless, insisting that he was not the donor’s tax adviser or diary secretary. This lack of detail extended to Ben Delo, whose history includes a US conviction related to money laundering laws—a legal hurdle eventually cleared via a pardon from Donald Trump.

The exchange grew increasingly strained as Robinson questioned why two crypto moguls would suddenly shower a party with millions. While Tice suggested it was born of pure civic duty, critics pointed toward Reform’s promises to slash crypto taxes and dismantle industry regulations as far more likely motivators. In a moment of desperation, Tice urged listeners to trust the word of the party’s compliance team, an entity whose existence had remained largely theoretical until this specific crisis emerged.

Ultimately, it fell back onto Nigel Farage to tidy up the wreckage later in the day during a BBC interview. In typical fashion, Farage shifted the blame away from his own camp, suggesting that if the donations failed to meet upcoming legislative deadlines, it was simply because the government had introduced restrictive rules that Reform could no longer bypass. While Labour has faced its own accusations of hypocrisy regarding how these donation limits were handled behind the scenes, the sheer scale of seventy two million pounds has ensured that every eye in Westminster is now firmly fixed on Reform’s ledger.
