Bitter Primary Feud Culminates in Shocking Cross Party Endorsement

November 2, 2026 2 min read

The Michigan Democratic party was thrown into chaos this weekend when Congresswoman Haley Stevens stunned officials by endorsing her Republican opponent, Mike Rogers, just forty eight hours before a pivotal Senate election. The dramatic move followed a breakdown in relations between Stevens and the Democratic nominee, Abdul El Sayed, who narrowly defeated her in the August primary. In a striking visual of political division, Stevens spent Sunday morning worshipping alongside Rogers at a Detroit church, while El Sayed campaigned separately with other party leaders nearby.

Stevens framed her decision as a direct response to being pushed out of the campaign fold. After being uninvited from a joint event intended to show party unity, she released a video stating that since the nominee made it clear she was no longer welcome, she would instead support Rogers. The endorsement triggered immediate turmoil within her own camp, leading to the resignation of her longtime chief of staff and sparking outrage from high ranking Democrats. Senate Leader Chuck Schumer condemned the move as a despicable betrayal, while state party chair Curtis Hertel suggested Stevens had abandoned her core values and effectively severed ties with the state party.

The rift reflects deeper ideological fractures that defined their brutal primary battle. While Stevens remains a steadfast supporter of Israel, El Sayed has emerged as a sharp critic of the alliance, contributing to tension among certain segments of the Democratic coalition in Michigan. Representative Debbie Dingell admitted she was the one who ultimately asked Stevens to skip the unified appearance because the friction between the two candidates had become too distracting during such a critical window before Election Day.

Despite the firestorm surrounding the endorsement, El Sayed remained dismissive when questioned by reporters on Sunday afternoon. He claimed he does not think about Stevens and insisted that none of these interpersonal conflicts matter compared to the economic struggles facing voters. However, for Democratic strategists hoping to maintain control of Capitol Hill, the public defection serves as an uncomfortable reminder of how deeply fractured their base remains in one of the nation’s most essential swing states.
