Rise in abuse of election candidates is ‘changing politics’ in England

September 15, 2026 2 min read

The landscape of English politics is shifting in a worrying direction as a surge in abuse and intimidation targets election candidates. According to a recent review by the Electoral Commission, harassment has become a pervasive issue during local and mayoral contests, reaching a level where it is actively altering how people campaign. Candidates have reported harrowing experiences ranging from verbal assaults and spitting to physical confrontations, leaving many feeling unsafe in their own communities.

The impact of this hostility is not felt equally across the board. Women, individuals from minority ethnic backgrounds, and people with disabilities are disproportionately targeted. Many female candidates now avoid campaigning alone or steer clear of controversial topics to mitigate risk, while some disabled candidates expressed feelings of helplessness when facing aggression on doorsteps. This climate of fear has led a third of affected candidates to consider whether they can ever stand for election again, threatening to narrow the diversity of voices available in public office.

Vijay Rangarajan, chief executive of the Electoral Commission, warned that there is a dangerous trend toward the dehumanization of political opponents. He highlighted a toxic cycle where online vitriol spills into the real world, noting that people are increasingly filmed in public specifically to spark further outrage via social media. This blending of digital and physical harassment creates an environment where personal lives and families are dragged into political disputes, sometimes involving children being harassed at school due to their parents’ candidacy.

While voters generally remain satisfied with the mechanics of how elections are run, the commission is calling for urgent action to restore basic civility. Recommendations include pushing social media platforms to implement faster responses to abuse and urging political parties to demand respect among their supporters. With proposed legislation aiming to better protect home addresses and increase sentences for offenders, officials hope to ensure that robust democratic debate does not come at the cost of personal safety.
