Trump dismisses AI alarms as a ‘HOAX’ — worrying White House officials

President Donald Trump sparked significant internal friction within his own administration on Monday, launching a blistering attack on those calling for stricter artificial intelligence regulations. In a flurry of social media posts, the president dismissed warnings about the existential risks of AI as a hoax, comparing the alarmism to climate change and previous investigations into his campaign. For Trump, the primary goal remains ensuring that the United States outpaces China and maximizes economic gains, which he believes far outweigh the theoretical dangers posed by cutting edge models.

The tension peaked during a phone call with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, whom Trump reached while Huang was speaking at a conference in Los Angeles. Putting the president on speakerphone for the audience to hear, Huang listened as Trump declared that robots would not be taking over the world and boasted that his own intellect and common sense were sufficient safeguards against any technological rogue elements. This defiant stance aligns with Trump’s view of AI as a golden goose for the American economy, citing massive stock market gains and the construction of data centers as proof of success under his leadership.

While Vice President JD Vance echoed some of this skepticism, suggesting that requests for regulation from tech CEOs might be a Trojan horse designed to stifle competition, other figures in the White House are less convinced. Some officials expressed private anxiety over the president’s apparent dismissal of serious security threats and job losses. They worry that treating systemic risks as mere conspiracies leaves the country vulnerable and puts moderate Republicans in a difficult position with voters who are increasingly skeptical of unchecked AI growth.

Despite the rhetoric, some efforts toward diplomacy continue behind the scenes. Administration experts on cybersecurity are expected to meet later this week to discuss potential frameworks for safety checks. Similarly, House Speaker Mike Johnson indicated plans to bring together lawmakers and tech executives in the coming weeks to find a middle ground. However, given Trump’s insistence that he alone provides all the necessary guardrails for the industry, any resulting legislation may face an uphill battle against its own commander in chief.
