Trump touches a nerve while in Ireland by saying reunification would be ‘fantastic’

September 15, 2026 2 min read

President Donald Trump stirred significant political waters during a visit to his Irish golf course this weekend, describing the prospect of a unified Ireland as fantastic. Speaking with Prime Minister Micheál Martin in Dublin, Trump suggested that the reunification of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland is inevitable and might as well happen now. While he noted that the United Kingdom would naturally have something to say about such a move, his willingness to weigh in on one of the most sensitive issues in British and Irish history marks a departure from previous American presidents who typically avoid direct commentary on the matter.

The debate over Northern Irelands status is deeply rooted in decades of sectarian violence known as the Troubles, pitting those who wish to remain part of the UK against nationalists seeking union with Ireland. Although a 1998 peace accord largely ended the bloodshed, it left the final status of the region open to future democratic votes. The reaction from London was muted but firm, with Prime Minister Andy Burnhams office reiterating that a referendum would only be considered if public opinion shifted decisively toward unification. Some analysts suggest Trumps remarks, coupled with similar comments regarding the Falkland Islands, may reflect broader tensions between Washington and London.

Beyond the geopolitical friction, Trumps visit sparked domestic unrest within Ireland itself. Thousands gathered in central Dublin for protest marches, waving flags and chanting slogans against his presidency and his record on human rights and migration. One protester dismissed Trumps sudden interest in Irish unity as superficial, suggesting he lacked basic understanding of the complexities involved. These demonstrations stood in stark contrast to meetings with official figures, including President Catherine Connolly, who reportedly used their brief encounter to criticize US policy in the Middle East and warn against the normalization of war.

Despite the protests in the capital, members of the Trump family defended their footprint in rural Ireland. In an interview with national broadcaster RTE, Eric Trump highlighted their golf course in Doonbeg as a major local employer and urged critics to speak with residents who benefit from their investments. As Trump continued his tour across the island, his blend of provocative diplomacy and commercial interests left many observers wondering whether his comments were intended as genuine diplomatic outreach or merely another exercise in disruption.
