Wall Street Maintains Regular Hours Despite Federal Holiday Observed Nationwide

October 12, 2026 2 min read

Investors looking to make moves this coming Monday should keep their calendars clear because the United States stock markets will remain fully operational. While many government offices and banks may be shut down for Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples’ Day, trading on Wall Street will proceed as a typical business day. It is important to note, however, that there is a split in the financial sector; while stocks stay active, the U.S. bond market will be closed according to guidelines from the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

The duality of the calendar date reflects a broader cultural shift in how the second Monday of October is viewed across the country. Since 1892, Columbus Day has served as a federal holiday often marked by celebrations of Italian American heritage. In more recent years, critics have pointed toward Christopher Columbus’s treatment of Native Americans, leading former President Joe Biden to issue the first presidential proclamation for Indigenous Peoples’ Day in 2021. Although this newer recognition isn’t an official federal holiday nationwide, several states and cities have adopted it into their own local observances.

For those tracking their portfolios through the end of the year, things will remain steady for quite some time. After closing previously for Labor Day back in September, shareholders won’t see another break in action until late November. The next scheduled pause for the stock market occurs on Thursday, November 26th, when trading halts in observance of Thanksgiving. Following that autumn break, investors can expect one final closure on December 25th for Christmas Day before heading into the new year.
